MONROEVILLE, Pa. – On Sunday, Oct. 1, 2023, hundreds of people will gather at Monroeville Community Park West for NAMIWalks Keystone PA, an annual 5K walk that raises awareness of mental health and spreads the word that treatment works and recovery is possible.
"There is nothing more powerful than seeing hundreds of people celebrating the same cause,” said Christine Michaels, CEO of NAMI Keystone Pennsylvania. "Everyone is walking for someone. It might be themselves, a family member, or a friend. But we all have mental health, and we all know someone who is affected by a mental health condition.”
This is the 17th year for NAMIWalks Keystone PA. The family-friendly event features food trucks, a DJ, face painting, and balloon artists. More than 300 walkers and 48 teams are participating.
“The walk is our chance to come together and show people that we are united in our mission to end the stigma associated with mental health,” said Michaels. “Stigma and judgment stop people from seeking help, and this event is all about changing that.”
NAMIWalks is the organization's largest awareness and fundraising event of the year. Donations fund the support groups, educational programs and presentations, and advocacy initiatives that NAMI Keystone Pennsylvania offers throughout the year at no cost to those who participate.
"The demand for mental health support and education has never been greater and the funds raised will help our organization meet a very critical need."
